Chuck V. Loring, CFRE, Senior Partner

Chuck V. Loring, CFRE is the senior partner of the Indianapolis & Ft. Lauderdale - based firm of Loring, Sternberg & Associates, which provides fundraising and governance consulting services to nonprofits.  Chuck is also a Senior Governance Associate for BoardSource (formerly the National Center for Nonprofit Boards) in Washington, DC, offering expertise in board development and other governance issues to nonprofit boards across the country.

Chuck is a past president of the Indiana Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and is the founder of Indiana Fund Raising Day, the state's largest nonprofit fundraising conference.  Chuck is a Certified Fund Raising Executive, holds a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and an MBA from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California.  He is a past president of the UCSB Alumni Association and a former trustee of the UCSB Foundation.

Chuck has helped hundreds of local and regional nonprofits across the country improve their governance and has worked with such prominent national charities as The American Lung Association, Second Harvest Food Banks, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and The Urban League.  In 2003 the national offices of Easter Seals of America named Chuck as its official governance consultant to work with Easter Seals' 75 independent affiliates.

Among Chuck's many repeat clients are The Donors Forum of Chicago, The Philanthropy Center at Rollins College, The Central Florida YMCA, The Sisters of Charity Foundation of Columbia, SC,  The Hartford Community Foundation and the Nonprofit Management Center in Wichita Falls, TX.  During the past year Chuck has been a featured speaker at nonprofit conferences sponsored by the University of Kentucky, North Park University and BoardSource.

Chuck has also worked with dozens of trade associations and professional societies ranging from law and medicine to agriculture

 

Sue Hacker Nelson, CFRE, Managing Partner

Sue Hacker Nelson, CFRE specializes in development in small to mid-sized shops and has direct experience in many areas of philanthropic fundraising including annual, planned and major gifts, corporate and foundation giving and capital campaigns. 

Prior to joining LSA in 2004, she served as Director of Development for Noble of Indiana overseeing A Noble Campaign:  Building Lives, Building Families, a multi-million dollar effort.  In addition to social service, she also has experience raising funds for the arts, education and professional organizations.

As a longtime member of the AFP - Indiana Chapter Sue is a Past President and a past co-chair of the Indiana Philanthropy Awards Banquet and Indiana Fund Raising Day.  Sue was awarded the Chapter's 1999, President's Award for outstanding service to the Indiana Chapter of NSFRE.

She holds a B.A. in Asian Studies from DePauw University and received her Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation in 1999.

 

Dave Sternberg, Founding Partner

Dave Sternberg is a founding partner of Loring, Sternberg & Associates. Prior to founding LSA Dave was the Chief Development Officer for the Phi Kappa Theta National Foundation, Assistant Director of Annual Giving at Bulter University and interim Director of Development for Prevention of Child Abuse Indiana. In a one-person shop, Dave ran numerous annual campaigns, major gift efforts, and began a basic planned giving program. In higher education Dave conducted personal solicitations and created new annual giving structures for the University.

As a volunteer, Dave has been active with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Indiana Chapter, serving as the VP of Programs in 1998 and 1999 and as Chapter President in 2000. He also Chaired Indiana Fund Raising Day in both 1997 and 1998.

During his time with LSA Dave’s council has included annual fund management, development audits, board governance, feasibility/planning studies, campaign management, and executive search. Dave has worked with membership associations, hospitals, zoos, museums, arts organizations, children's organizations and community foundations.

In 2000 Dave joined the faculty of The Fund Raising School at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. He teaches Building the Annual Fund, Managing the Capital Campaign, Developing Major Gifts, Fundraising for Small Nonprofits and Principles and Techniques of Fundraising.

Dave has taught both nationally and internationally for The Fund Raising School and can be seen at fundraising days and conferences around the United States including, Omaha, Des Moines, Moline, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Lawrence, and Milwaukee.

In 2004 Dave began to limit his engagements with LSA to serve as the Associate Director of Public Service and Strategic Initiatives for The Fund Raising School at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. In this capacity, he was responsible for creating new partnerships to expand the reach of The Fund Raising School, developing new was revenue streams, assisting with course development and teaching Fund Raising School courses.

Presently, Dave is the Chair of the Washington Township Schools Foundation.
